What program to make showreel breakdowns

[apologies if you get the duplicate message in an email]

Do you remember the presentation we all did, and the compiositing class work ? They did the breakdowns showing original plates, text, green screen etc all in layers. What program did they use for that ? It allowed for text as well before the shot started.

I would like to span my footage of my jet fighter on the runway to show the breakdowns, so , the final shot, then back plate, diffuse pass, specular, etc etc.

Can anyone help ?

  1. Yes..you can easy do that in the Adobe After Effect, and photoshop, first of all you need make texts in the photoshop and then save it by 32 bit(with alpha)Tga or Tiff file format, secondly, put your whole elements (original plates,texts...etc)in After Effect in older (i.e. texts will above the original plates.),and then do some adjustment like Keyframe the opacity value of the texts for fade in~fade out effects or apply a glow filter to texts let it shine.....etc that`s it ..when you done all you want ,just render it out as a sequence.

  3. You will most likely be able to do everything you need to do with After Effects, but another option would be to use Adobe Premiere or (for Apple users) Final Cut Pro. These are dedicated sequential editing programs with all the bells and whistles you'd expect. Its been a while since I used After Effects and I cant remember how it handles sound. If you want to time and cut your showreel/breakdown to music and layer other audio as well I think you are better off using one of these two programs. You can also layer as many visual tracks on top of each other as you like so long as they have an alpha channel and you can also key attributes like the opacity, translation, various filters/effects and add wipes to each of the individual channels. When you are happy with it all, you can render the final sequence out in any video format you need so long as the proper codecs are installed.
